(More customer reviews)Let me start by saying that I'm really far too old to admit to buying this child's toy. That being said, when I saw this on the shelf, I knew I had to buy it. I was about eight years old when the Power Rangers were originally on, and like most kids, I idolized the Green Ranger. Of all of the show's merch, the Dragon Dagger was the one item that alluded my grasp. For the intervening sixteen or so years, always in the back of my mind has been the disappointment that I never managed to get my hands on one of these toys. This background disappointment was brought to the forefront when, last weekend, after getting off work, I came home to find Power Rangers on ABC, and not just Power Rangers, but the last episode in the Green Ranger's plot arc. Oh, sweet childhood pain... Then, as though a gift from fate itself, as I was looking through the toy section for a gift for my nephew, I see a Dragon Dagger, sitting right there on the shelf. I was inordinately excited. I bought it. I brought it home, tried to hide it unsuccessfully from my wife, endured her teasing, and then finally opened the packaging. It was like I'd always imagined it would be. Sort of. It's a bit bulky in the middle, due both to an opening for a belt clip and the battery compartment. But that's fine, since I'm not planning on playing with the thing, aside from making it make that Dragonzord summoning sound once. (I haven't waited sixteen years for nothing.) Also, the extendable blade that comes out of the handle clatters about inside, but again, not an issue for me. I just want to hear that sound. So I activate it. And it's the wrong sound. Seriously?! I was heartbroken. Understand, I don't really care about the 2010 version of the Dragon Dagger. As a toy for today's kid who just discovered the show, it'd be awesome. My nephew would probably love it. However, as an adult who grew up watching the Power Rangers, and who always wanted that one toy that got away, it's really disappointing. I don't understand why Bandai opted to create an all-new sound effect, but they did. For those my age expecting to be able to relive a moment of their childhood, this toy isn't for you. For those who are new fans, I'd say give it a shot. It feels sturdy, and the sound effects, while just wrong, are clear and plenty loud. Personally, I'll be taking it back and hoping that maybe in another sixteen years, they'll get it right. I can wait.
